3D design SAMPLES and research - Journal...

 24th October 201 ....

Assessment out of the way and dealt with didn't go as badly as what I thought it was going to be. I was panicking for no reason. Got my feedback from Matt and my fellow classmates and it was pretty good to be fair some really good comments and some good feedback to help me. I actually passed 3D I got my feedback from matt in tutorial and all I need to complete is my second design sheet and make my two glass tiles along with finishing my glazing on my ceramic tiles. Im hoping to get these finished as soon as I get back to college the first week back after half term to get it out the way and over and done with so that I can focus on the subjects in hand and not worry about getting stuck with this one. Printed evaluation off stuck in sketchbook and feedback sheets 3d sketchbook complete and crossed off my list just getting the actual 3d work and my second design sheet complete.

17th October 2011...

Deadline for 3D project ....... How scary does this feel right now I really cannot belive 6 weeks is up already and Ive got to hand in my work today woow !! I know I havent got everything complete as I havent been well recently flued up to the max =(  never mind ive done as best as what I could have. Nearly finished my final design sheet just got to annotate and make it more colourful than what it is. Sketchbook complete just stick in last few samples and annotate them and print out my evaluation and stick in  my sketchbook to complete. We had assessment all day within 3D and even though I was panicking and gettin myself in a flap It went pretty ok better than what I'd expected it to be and Id realised that I had done more than what I'd thought some other people in my class had and I got some great feedback from my fellow collegues which has helped me now no what I need to do and get this project tied under the belt so that I dont get dragging it out when I come back over half term then I find myself struggling when I have to do fashion/textiles visual communication and photography oh boy !! So my plan for this half term is too get everything crossed off my list so that when I come back my mind is focused on the lessons in hand and nothing else. =D

10th October 2011

Final samples and design sheets completed! ready for me to get on with my final design idea; I took my inspiration for my final design from Art Nouveau and William Morris printed textile floral designs. Considering the Project title "Contrasts" I have interpreted historical and a contemporary contrast to my ceramic tiles which I will make out of clay. My A2 design sheets show the development of the stages of my initial ideas through sketch drawings and Primary and Secondary research showing how I am going to interpret these into my final design idea.

As you can see from my samples below I tried a series of different clays red, brown and grey clay to experiment with different colours of my materials and the different effects the clay produces when it is heated in the kiln. I experimented with differnet objects to see what designs and patterns I could create I twisted copper wire into spiral shapes and flowers and pressed into the clay, In addition, I used fresh flowers and squashed them in a flower press before hand and then pushed them into the clay too. Furthermore, I tried a technique in sand where I squashed flowers and petals into the sand to leave an imprint unfortunatley that never worked as my peatals was to small and when I squashed them into the sand it just left imprints of my fingers so this was an option crossed of the list to produce my clay tiles.

The technique that worked the best was the fresh flowers squashed into the clay as when I put them into the kiln and they dried I got some really beautifull effects as the flowers had sunk into the clay and left their inprint. I really like the red clay when it dries it stands out better than the rest of the others I think it looks bright and bold unlike the other clays they look dull and dirty.

Once my samples were dry I wanted to add some colour to them so I Glazed them with stone wash and earth wash glazes. I painted the glaze once I selected from the colours on the chart as you can see in my photos the selection of glazes available and mixed the glaze with water to a custard like mixture (from my photographs the process of me mixing my chosen colours) I Painted the parts of my samples where I wanted the glaze on the tiles e.g - petals of the flowers. On my swirl ones I painted the glaze all over then with a damp sponge removed the glaze from the background as I only wanted the glaze on the spirals not all over the clay aswell. Once happy I put them in the kiln labelling them stone wash and earth wash so that jamie new what temperature to put them at stone wash -DL Satin Blue DOL Glaze 1250 degrees - 1300 degrees c etc.

Mixing up my selected glazes adding water and stir with a stick until it turns like a custard like substance.

My samples and the selected glaze I want them to be. I have chosen a variety of blues as within my sketchbook I like china and thought it would be nice to try out my samples with a blue and red instead of the usual china being blue and white contrast.  Stone wash- Dl Satin Blue DOL glaze 1250-1300 degrees c.

Satin Blue Beige

Earth wash- Truu Blue.

Pinting glaze on certain parts of my samples to see what the colours will look like and so that when they are dry I can pick the best one for my final clay tiles.

Materials and proceeses in the workshop.

The colours are not the same as they are on the colour pallette as it is the chemicals with the glazes that change its colour when settled down however when they are in the kiln and hot the chemicals will change it colour.

Image of the kiln do not open when sign is on door as its very hot in there glass and clay can go into these.

Two smaller kilns in the workshop for smaller pieces of work or small sample pieces the larger kiln is for bigger structures of work.

The earth wash glazes colour pallette.

Glazes mixed up in big tubs stored away in the workshop hazard chemicals wear gloves as hard to wash off skin.

Glazing brushes for glazing only do not use for anything else as mixing brushes with other paints etc wash out after use and put away with glazing equipment.

Taking away the glaze using a damp sponge so that the glaze only stays on the spirals.

My final design clay tiles using fresh flowers imprinted into the clay. I have used red clay as I like the colour and it stands out.

Equipment I used when I was rolling out my clay and cutting my flowers.

First 3D lesson today oh my god was like information overload at first. Got handed the project brief read three times over already and still dont seem to sink in. Started brainstorming ideas on contrasts and three dimensional design, which helped me know what I wanted to research and what Im interested in within 3D.
Busy bee!!! Homework to collate all my research and start sticking in sketchbook.  Yay !!! 1st page of journal complete LOL!!

Contrasts .....
what is the meaning of contrasts?
what is a contrast?
Is a contrast an opposite to another thing?

Been re- reading the brief over and over again and again so it sticks in my brain and to keep reminding myself what it is im actually doing and going to be designing.
Things that are particularly standing out to me at this present time are Product design, Spatial design, need to develop upon this and do alot more research so that i am aware and understand what these catorgories actually mean and what I think they mean?

14th September 2011
Starting to collate my research together and sticking and being creative tea staining my sketchbooks =D however, I am a slight bit worried that I am loosing focus of what I have actually been asked to do within the project brief  feel like I am going off in the wrong direction with it as Interior design is a too broad catorgory with historical and contemporary theres way too much need to narrow it down and be more specific in what I am interested in creating.

My second sample wood here we did a health and safety induction in the worshop showing us how to use those big scary machines drilling and sawing my block of wood. I drilled holes but never went all the way through as you can see the wood shows different layers and this is quite effective . i then used a hammer and letter inprints to create like a bubbly effect and unfortunately we ran out of time soo I couldnt cut round my half circles.

I am looking more towards renaissance and tiles as i am particulary interested in them i found an artist called Andrea Palladio whose work is influenced by roman and greek architecture I really like the illustrations and print designs they are high classical forms of renaissance.

Another whole day finally completed ideas and concepts my initial thoughts and processes for my design sheets as I am currently looking at tiles Matt gave me an amazing book on tiles and within this book I found many ways in which tiles are made and fire glazing and creating many different effects and textures and mosaics for tiles which really inspired me and which i think has helped me move forward to do my design ideas for my A1 spreadsheet.

Aliminium sample from Mondays lesson here i am experimenting with the tools and different techniques shown to us in the health and safety induction within the workshop I had ago at rolling another piece of thin wired metal twisting it and swirling with pliers into a spiral kind of shape then rolled through together to imprint the spiral mark onto the aliminium square metal. Along the right hand side i used round punchers and a hammer to make a bubble effect however when I pushed the aliminium through the roller machine it flattened my bubble shapes out. If i was to do it again I would of rolled my spiral shape through the roller first then use the punchers.

Glass sample; as i am currently looking at tile designs Mosaics are one of the many that I really like so i cut up squares of copper really small and placed them in a mosaic fashion onto a piece of glass then when I was happy of where I wanted the copper squares I placed another piece of glass on top and placed in the kiln . I really like this effect but some of the copper squares moved out of place and then glass is not lined together but I think it works really well and may consider this as one of my options when making my tiles as they are contemporary glass tiles with the historical contrast to them.

Another sample we did within the workshop playing around with wood and fire I burned my piece of wood sanded around the edges creating a curved shape then with the drilling machine I drilled holes not goin all the way down to see what effect the burned wood would have like in my dry wood sample atthe very top of the page. unfortunately I didnt let my wood dry as when we burned it we had to dip in in water to let it cool down and because i never let it dry probably when drilling the sawdustof the drill went into the holes i was creating and stuck in them and as the sawdust stuck I couldnt get it out because the holes I drilled where to small and it stuck to the wood.

My handy sanding =D

My other sample i did this one I never did anything too as I ran out of time but i would like to have ago at maybe carving a design into the burned wood block to see what effect this would have.

My copper spirals I used pliers to bend the copper wire into the shape that i wanted to create.

Two different types of materials copper and lead wanted to create a flower pattern as my designs are art noveau and floral based.

Starting to get ideas together drawing them out onto my a2 sheet of paper. I have been looking at clay tiles and matt gave me a particular interesting book and showed me some example of other students work where they brought in objects soaked them into clay and it left the inprint off the item on the clay . I found this intersting and I am gathering fllowers and leaves and twigs soo that on monday I can experiment and test these out for my self.

3/10/2011

Today has been ok did one a2 design sheet for homework of some design ideas to help me make my final piece my tiles; Took in a bunch of flowers that were drooping sitting in my foster moms living room so put them in a flower press squashed the rest of the life what was left in them lmao and used some on my design sheets then in lesson today really enjoyed took inspiration from other students work that matthew showed me broke flowers apart and cut some up and placed then in several different designs in clay red clay and sand as you can see from my samples below.

Here I cut off the heads of my bunch of flowers Put them into the flower press as I want to use these in my tiles so I wanted to see what effect they would create when they were squashed and sunk into the clay . As you can see the stages I went through within my photographs, and you can see my glass and clay minature tiles I have created.

Flower head pressed however when I picked it up all the petals fell apart I think next time I needed to off left them longer so this won't happen again also I experimented with the sand imprinting the flower into sand; due to the small flowers it unfortunately never worked as you can see below.
